Timeline: The conclusion of the Noa arc of the anime.

Personality: Ryuji is a young man who at first glance, appears cocky, overconfident, and charismatic. That initial impression is not wrong. He very much is all of those things. He has a posse of fangirls who adore him, both because of his looks and his charming nature. He invents a whole game by himself, Dungeon Dice Masters, showing a very high level of intelligence as well. In fact, he seems very perfect just to look at him for the first time, and this is an impression he tries to cultivate. He is talkative and social to a point but also tends to hold himself at a distance from people to an extent. He is never seen to talk down about friendship the same as someone like Kaiba, but he does seem to be a little standoffish at times, and doesn't get as easily invested in things as some of Yugi's other friends.
The way he becomes friends with Yugi & co. is a bit strange, showcasing there is more to Ryuji than the perfect impression he at first gives off. Ryuji has some vengeful and sadistic tendencies, although he isn't truely evil. He makes Jonouchi dress in a dog suit when Jonouchi loses to him at Dungeon Dice Masters a form of humiliation, showing that he likes to show his superiority to others. However, it's not just for his superiority Ryuji fights. Even though he seems independent and likes to project himself as such, the truth is that when Ryuji forms a bond with an authority figure, he becomes very attached to them and will do anything for them.
In the anime, this manifests in him becoming determined to get revenge for his idol, Maximillion Pegasus, who was defeated by Yugi. (In the manga, this is much more complicated and involves his father instead of Pegasus, but I'm not playing from the manga so that doesn't matter.) He does look up to Pegasus for faith and inspiration so when Pegasus is defeated, he doesn't know how to take that and vows to get revenge. This shows Ryuji can care about and look up to people despite his cool exterior. He also gets a crush on Shizuka, Jonouchi's sister, showing he is capable of romantic longing as well. He can be quite charming as well with most girls, although this charm never seems to pay off where Shizuka is concerned.

Abilities: Ryuji doesn't possess any supernatural abilities, but he does possess several learned skills. First of all, he's very intelligent, being able to invent Dungeon Dice Masters at the age of sixteen. He's also a very brilliant strategist, especially at it relates to Duel Monsters, but this can be applied to other things like manipulating people as well, or more traditional fights though he prefers not to dirty himself with such things if he doesn't have to.
First Person: [The train rattled to a slow stop. That by itself was weird. Ryuji was used to bullet trains that moved fast, not whatever this was. But he wasn't going to panic just yet. Panicking, in his feeling, never got anyone anywhere. He'd have to figure something out first.
He got up and peeking out, looking around until he saw someone. He gave them a halfhearted wave of his hand to get their attention. If they were a pretty girl, he'd even smile and try to look charming. But if they were a guy, he'd be more distant. Either way his question would be the same.]
Hey. Yo. You know where this place is? I think I took a wrong turn somewhere.
Third Person: Ryuji had seen and done a lot of strange things in his life. Maybe that was why he took this so easily in stride, although he still couldn't deny that he felt a little bit anxious. He carefully tried to keep that tucked away out of sight, though. It might just give anyone who wanted to harm him a weapon and he could not harm that. It crossed his mind that this might be some kind of Shadow Game, even, but usually if it was a Shadow Game, that purpose would have been revealed by now.
So what was going on?
It wasn't that he wasn't thinking about it, but he wasn't going to dwell unhappily either. First things had to come first. He'd make a name for himself. Then he'd work on getting back home. He had no intention of staying here forever no matter what anyone said. But he didn't think he'd be able to get anyone's attention right way either.
He thumbed his chin and then made his decision. He would have to seek out the best known person in this place. They would know what to do.
